Employees and American Civil Liberties Union demand Amazon stop facilitating government surveillance

This is a guest post by Jeremy Leggett. Views are the author's own and do not necessarily represent the opinions or positions of MyGridGB or Dr Andrew Crossland.

Employees write imploring Bezos to stop selling Rekognition AI facial recognition software to government agencies and police.

The letter says: “Amazon Rekognition is primed for abuse in the hands of governments. This product poses a grave threat to communities, including people of color and immigrants, and to the trust and respect Amazon has worked to build. Amazon must act swiftly to stand up for civil rights and civil liberties, including those of its own customers, and take Rekognition off the table for governments.”

Every workforce needs to take a stand like this, with equivalent technology in other firms. There must be a stigma attached to this work, not an issues-blind competition.
