What if homes used heat pumps instead of gas?
A simulation replacing gas boilers with electric heat pumps for the heat currently met by gas piped to homes and small businesses, comparing the primary energy required.
- Heating demand is approximated by gas taken off the distribution network — homes plus some small commercial use.
- Existing gas boiler efficiency: 90% (gross calorific value).
- Heat pump seasonal performance factor (SCOP): 3.0 units of heat per unit of electricity.
- Electricity primary energy factor: 1.8, reflecting today's GB generation mix; this falls further as the grid decarbonises.
- Illustrative only: assumes 100% conversion, and excludes network losses, hybrid systems, and reduced heat-pump performance in cold snaps.
Carbon figures use the BEIS combustion factor (202 gCO2/kWh) and exclude upstream emissions. LNG-heavy days understate lifecycle carbon.
