Investment fell 56% in 2017. Meanwhile government is to consult on dropping planning permission for seismic work and fracking in shale.

Mary Creagh, a member of Parliament who leads the the Environmental Audit Committee: “Billions of pounds of investment is needed in clean energy, transport, heating and industry to meet our carbon targets. A dramatic fall in investment is threatening the government’s ability to meet legally binding climate change targets.”

Claire Perry, energy minister, says the the government seeks to ensure shale exploration happens “in the most environmentally responsible way while making it easier for companies and local communities to work together.”

In my opinion, given the opinion polls consistently showing how popular renewables are, and how unpopular fracking is, this is frankly an assault on democracy. But given how this government is handling itself on Brexit, can we be surprised?
